Kidney Disease

Kidney disease (also called renal disease) is a common disease among older cats, but may also affect younger cats. Common clinical signs of kidney disease include weight loss, decreases grooming, and worsening of hair coat quality.

Causes of kidney disease include degenerative changes tot he kidneys associated with aging, hereditary diseases and birth defects, bacterial and viral infections, and rarely, neoplasia (cancer).

While kidney disease is not curable, there are many things that we can do to slow the progression of the disease and improve your cat's quality of life; it is not uncommon for cats with kidney disease to live years with proper nutritional and medical support.
