Signs Of Sickness In Cats

December 15, 2024

Kitties may very well be one of the most complicated animals on the planet. They’re not only extremely cute, they can also be hilarious, playful, aloof, cuddly, angry, and relaxed … sometimes all within the span of a few minutes! One area where Fluffy’s mystique can backfire is when it comes to letting on that she’s ill. Many cats try to mask signs of illness, so you’ll need to keep a close eye out. A Northwest Arkansas veterinarian lists some things to watch for in this article.

Poor Fur

Kitties are usually pretty good at keeping up with their beauty care needs. However, if Fluffy isn’t feeling well, she may not be up to her usual routine. Her fur will soon start looking greasy or matted.

Change In Appetite/Thirst

Fluffy can be finicky, but if she doesn’t like her food, she’ll probably just meow for something else. If she doesn’t want to eat, she may be ill. Unexplained changes in your cat’s water consumption may also be a red flag, as can sudden weight loss or gain.

Difficulty Urinating/Defecation

Pay attention to what you find in the litterbox. Changes in the color, texture, volume, or smell of your feline friend’s waste can be signs of medical issues. Straining to go is also a red flag, and should be treated as an emergency.

Eye Problems

Runny, swollen, crusty, or discolored eyes are not something you’d want to wait and see about. Contact your Northwest Arkansas vet immediately if you notice any of these signs.

Breathing Trouble

Fluffy should breathe smoothly and quietly, unless of course she’s meowing about something. Raspy or labored breathing are a sign that your furry friend requires immediate veterinary care.

Vomiting

The occasional hairball isn’t unusual for our feline pals. However, frequent, violent, or ongoing vomiting is definitely not normal.

Behavioral Changes

Is Fluffy just not acting like herself? Illness could be to blame. When a cuddly cat becomes aloof, or a quiet one starts meowing constantly, it’s a sign that something is going on.

Tips

These are just a few indications that something is amiss. Other potential red flags include things like lethargy, swelling, fever, limping, and visible injuries. If you aren’t sure whether Fluffy needs immediate care or not, call your Northwest Arkansas vet.
