Adopting A Rescue Cat

February 15, 2025

Are you seeking a new kitty companion to join your family? If that’s the case, you might be thinking about going to a shelter to find your new cat. That’s a great way to find your new pet! Of course, adopting a kitty is a big move, so there are many things to consider. Continue reading for suggestions from a local Northwest Arkansas vet on how to find Fluffy and help her settle in.

Choosing the Right Kitty

Choosing a cat can be both enjoyable and challenging. After all, Fluffy will be with you for a long time, perhaps decades. It’s critical to find the perfect fit.

Here are a few points to consider:

Breed: There are fewer variables to consider with cats than with canines. The AKC recognizes approximately 200 dog breeds, each with its own unique size, traits, energy level, and grooming demands. There is less variance in kitty breeds, but it does still factor in. For instance, Siamese cats are known for their active and lovable personalities, as well as their tendency to express their opinions rather loudly. A Ragdoll, on the other hand, is likely to be a sweet and quiet little love bug.

Age: The age of your feline companion should also be taken into consideration. Shelters have cats of all ages. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

  • Kittens: Cute, lovable, fun, playful, and really cute, kittens are impossible to resist. It is nice to raise your pet yourself, so that she becomes accustomed to your voice and characteristics early on and just thinks of you as her parent. The downside? Baby cats are like furry little toddlers: small, furry bundles of adorable mischief.
  • Grown Up: Adult cats are also great. Fluffy may still be lively, but she probably will have outgrown the desire (or capacity) to burrow under your entertainment center or climb the shower curtains.
  • Senior Cats: Seniors are also highly likable. A senior cat may not be as playful as a baby, but this is not necessarily a negative trait. It’s lovely to have a relaxed pet who just wants to sleep and cuddle. It might also be incredibly rewarding to provide that lovely feline with a comfy retirement.

Appearance: Many of our clients believe their cats are the cutest felines ever, and they are not wrong! Some people have specific preferences regarding your cat’s coat length, color, and/or pattern. That’s purrfectly fine!

History: If you’re acquiring a kitten, this may not be a huge factor, but it’s very important to consider for an older cat, especially if you own additional pets. Some cats get along well with furry roommates. Others are better suited for being only pets.

Personality: Each cat has its own distinct personality. One cat may be a cuddly lapcat, while another may simply judge you from her cat tower. It is critical to establish an emotional connection with your potential pet.

Health: If you look through adoptable pet listings, you may find that several cats have FeLV. Fluffy’s illness does not preclude her from living a full and happy life. However, if you have another cat, this would not be a suitable match. If you want to get two kittens, consider getting two FeLV-positive ones. There’s no risk, and this would be a wonderful act of kindness.

Finances: Cats aren’t the most expensive pets, but adopting and caring for Fluffy does come with some costs. Make sure you can afford to get toys, food, and litter, and provide veterinary care for your kitty companion.

Compatibility is another important consideration. Fluffy might reach out and grab your sweater with her paw at the shelter. Or you might just fall for that cute shy kitten in the corner. Allow yourself the freedom to follow your heart. Sometimes people just know they’ve found their pet.

Getting Ready For Your New Kitty

Before you bring your kitty friend home, you’ll need to gather some items. Your kitten will require the following:

  • Food
  • Toys
  • Carrier
  • Dishes
  • Treats
  • Leash and Collar
  • Beds
  • Litter box & litter

Some of these items should be selected keeping Fluffy’s age in mind. If you have a kitten, avoid clay and clumping cat litters. A senior may require a box that is low to the ground and easy to get into and out of. We also suggest talking to your vet about food.

Put your pet’s belongings in a quiet location so she has a comfortable place to relax as she settles in.

Take Fluffy to Our Northwest Arkansas Veterinary Clinic

One of the first things you should do is take your kitty companion to the vet. We love meeting new patients! Aside from purring, we’ll give Fluffy a thorough nose-to-tail examination. Your cat will also have to be checked for illnesses and parasites. The shelter atmosphere can be crowded, so there is always a risk of transmission.

This is especially critical if you have multiple pets. We recommend keeping your feline buddy separate from other pets at first. Don’t let them interact until you’ve received clearance from your veterinarian.

Parasite risk is one reason why this is crucial. Shelters normally try to keep things clean and disinfected, but with pets coming and going on a daily basis, it is impossible for them to maintain a sterile atmosphere. Your kitty should be tested for fleas, ticks, and worms. Fluffy will have to get started on parasite management. Your veterinarian will also talk to you about product options and help you pick the one that works best for you and your feline overlord.

Infections are another concern. Unfortunately, many shelter cats have been exposed to harmful infections. It’s critical to get your cat screened. This will allow you to determine whether your pet will require any additional care.

Your veterinarian will discuss any recommended screens or panels with you. This is also a good time to ask questions regarding your cat’s care needs, and get some personalized guidance for your pet’s diet, grooming, and overall care. We’re always willing to help!
