Choosing Furniture for Your Cat

March 15, 2025

Cats are very, very fond of lounging around and being adorable. Our feline pals are also pretty adept at selecting the most comfortable settings for themselves. Fluffy has no qualms about stretching out, sprawled, or cuddling up on your bed, chair, sofa, table, laptop, lap, floor, or any other surface she comes across. Kitties don’t mind using our things, but they do actually appreciate and profit from having objects that are solely theirs. Continue reading to learn how a local Fayetteville, AR veterinarian may help you choose the purrfect piece of cat furniture.

What Are the Advantages of Providing A Cat Tower?

The cat tower is the gold standard when it comes to pet furniture, and with good reason. Everyone benefits from having a place of their own. That’s true for cats, too! Fluffy may need a break from the toddler, the dog, the vacuum cleaner, or simply the continual action of people moving around.

Here are some other benefits:

Heights: Kitties are natural climbers, who often utilize trees in the wild.  You may have noticed your feline pal has an affinity for high vantage points. Your pet will not have a good view from the ground level. Fluffy’s claws are oriented in a way that allows her to climb things, which helps her escape predators. (Going down takes practice, but that’s a topic for another time.)

Security: Cats benefit from having trees in their natural habitat in a variety of ways. They provide a safe haven from predators, such as coyotes. They also offer Fluffy an ideal vantage point and a napping spot.

Nail Care Stations: One of the few disadvantages of owning a cat is that Fluffy may decide to sharpen her nails on your furniture. Your pet is not being harmful; she is only gratifying her inherent desire to keep her claws. This is unquestionably an example of embracing the concept of banding together when confronted with problems. You will have little success getting your cat to stop scratching. Do not punish her for this. This will simply confuse your pet and possibly make them afraid of you.

Instead, make a lovely manicure station for your feline. This protects your furniture while meeting your pet’s basic needs.

Do Cats Need Beds?

Fluffy may sleep for up to 20 hours every day, so it’s no surprise that beds are among her favorite things. Store-bought beds are fantastic, but then again, cats aren’t particularly picky about their sleeping surroundings. She might doze off in a plant pot, a lasagna pan, or even a pizza box. Folded blankets can be placed on a chest or ottoman to give extra comfort.

What Makes Boxes So Appealing To Cats?

We may never know for sure. The prevailing idea holds that cats like small, enclosed spaces. This is understandable, as nothing can approach Fluffy unseen when she’s in her favorite box. Nonetheless, photographs of cats forcing themselves into boxes that are either too large, excessively small, or are nothing more than a square form made of tape call this hypothesis into question.

How Do I Choose The Right Cat Tower?

Choosing a scratching post or cat tower is simple, but there are a few key elements to consider.

Durability: Fluffy’s tower must be able to withstand numerous feline shenanigans. Keep in mind that this could involve your pet making a daring jump onto the tower or simply rushing up it at high speed. While safety is clearly the foremost concern, there is another factor to consider. If your pet’s tower is unsteady when she tries to utilize it, she may become wary about it. This is probably instinctual as well. It’s simple to see why cats would learn that using an unstable tree as a nail-care station may not work out well.

Height: As previously indicated, cats enjoy climbing to elevated regions. In general, higher is better.

Accessibility: While kittens may readily climb to the top of a tower, an older cat may prefer something that is easier to get on and off. Consider your pet’s age and any physical limitations.

How Many Towers Should A Cat Have?

There isn’t a clear answer to this. If you want to spoil your furry little diva with a dozen cat trees or more, go for it! It’s also totally fine for two or three cats to share a tower. Make sure the tower has enough floors to accommodate all your pets at once.

What Are Other Options for Cat Furniture?

While Fluffy loves cat towers and beds, they are far from the only options offered. In reality, there are many adorable and entertaining purrniture options for your kitty companion.

Window Seats: Does your cat have a favorite perch near the windows? She will probably be just as content with a seat on an ottoman or an armchair with a nice view. This will give your pet a place to relax, enjoy the sun, and observe the surrounding fauna.

Cat Wheels: You may have seen the wheels that are popular with smaller pets like hamsters and gerbils. There are other variations created specifically for felines. This is a fantastic choice for a passionate and active cat.

Cat Shelves:  If you genuinely want to spoil your feline companion, consider getting some cat shelves for her. Kitties adore dashing around at elevated levels.
